Once upon a time, I fell in love with budgeting. If not, then seek out an older version or find a different tool altogether to find one that works for you.I’ve heard quite a few people ask, “Is YNAB worth the money?” It’s a fair question that deserves an honest answer, so let’s chat. If you do, then don't downgrade to an older version. What I suggest doing, before you buy either version, is try the 90 day trial. The version you're asking for is YNAB4, and each of those prior versions was a paid upgrade. YNAB was never a "one time" purchase either. I spent more on Quicken over the years than I do for nYNAB. Is Quicken a one-time purchase? No, it will only work for a couple of years, then bank sync will stop working unless you buy the upgrade.

When you think about it, financial software was/is never a "one-time" expense anyway.

Are you willing to be your ability to properly use the software on YNAB's willingness to update a program on which they've already dropped support? Plus my wife and I had several problems with Dropbox sync, even prior to the API change, and the nYNAB fee is worth it to avoid those issues if nothing else. Will they bother with doing it again? I don't know. Dropbox has already changed their API, and YNAB was nice enough to update the app after that change, otherwise it'd already be broken.
The old version of the software relies upon Dropbox for sync between multiple PCs and the Mobile app. Having your budget available to check prior to spending, and entering your purchases real-time is key to getting the most out of a system like YNAB, especially if you're using it along with a partner. Due to this, I'd suggest just starting with the latest version, then you won't be rushed into trying to break the old habits if (when) the time comes.Īs for the mobile app, this is a critical component. The biggest complaints people have had (and still have in some cases) about nYNAB is the differences between YNAB4 and the current version. The biggest reason is the old version isn't supported anymore, and things like the mobile app (which is the most important part in my opinion) could stop syncing at any time if Dropbox changes their interface and YNAB decides not to support the change. I know you're wanting to try YNAB4, but I highly recommend you don't, and start with the current version.
